Dear Friends,

As I read the alarming headlines about Hurricane Helene, I take the necessary precautions, as we all should when facing such dangers. But there is more to our response than just preparing for the storm.

I once read that the ocean reminds us of who we are, and I believe the same can be said of a hurricane. It reminds us of our vulnerability as human beings on a dynamic planet. At the same time, we can’t help but feel awe at the immense power of the storm, a reflection of God’s grandeur and majesty. It humbles us, reminding us that we are but a small part of creation, and that being alive in this moment is truly a gift.

In the face of such power, we are also called to pray—for those in the storm’s path, for the helpers who will respond, and for the strength and courage they will need in the days ahead.
I look forward to being with you again this weekend, once the storm has passed.

Peace,
Fr. Jonathan Evans
