Dear Friends,

This summer, I continue to read Life After Dom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart by Brian McLaren. He shares some insights that I would like to share with you. He begins one chapter with a quote from C.S. Lewis:

It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for a bird to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.
Brian goes on to say that if “if you don’t keep maturing in wisdom, you will not remain at your current level of awesome. Like an egg that doesn’t hatch, your awesome level will – I’m say to say this – decline along with civilization.” He then points to our need to have a beginner’s mind, much like Jesus imploring us to be like little children to enter the kingdom of heaven. This is an invitation to continued growth throughout our lives.

The world needs us to keep on growing, to keep on changing, to keep on maturing, no matter what age we have. I pray that we continue to grow here at St. Monica’s, not just in numbers, but in wisdom and love.

Peace and grace,

Fr. Jonathan
