Dear Friends,

Several times in the past year, I have come across the concept of the “beginner’s mind.” This refers to approaching situations, experiences, and life with openness, curiosity, and a lack of preconceptions. In essence, it means seeing things as if you were encountering them for the first time, without letting past knowledge or assumptions cloud your perception.

A beginner’s mind is receptive to new ideas, experiences, and perspectives without judgment or preconceived notions. It is curious and maintains a sense of wonder. It acknowledges one’s limitations and learns from others. It is flexible and able to let go of long-held beliefs in order to see from other angles. And finally, it is fully present in the moment.

I challenge us to see Holy Week with a beginner’s mind, from the procession of the Palms, to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil. I wonder what kind of transformation we could experience? I wonder what kind of insights we could gain and how that might change how we love God and our neighbor?

I look forward to seeing you all in the coming week, and I pray that it be a sacred journey for us together.

In Christ,

Fr. Jonathan
